Pearwood (green Pyrus Communis)

Turning Stock. This close grained fruitwood has uniform texture and is excellent for turning and carving. It takes stain well, and has been substituted for ebony. The natural color of pearwood is light cream to tan, some of these blanks have reddish heart streaks. In marquetry and intarsia, pearwood is used for caucasian skin.

Definitely a rescued stash! These turning blanks were created from recently split FIREWOOD, from one of the largest pear trees we have ever seen, 20" in diameter. As the yard tree began to die and drop big limbs on the driveway, the owner decided to cut it down. The trunk was rescued by a neighboring woodworker, who said the last crop of pears from this magnificent tree was "abundant, but tasted terrible."

Walnut, Black: (Juglans nigra)
We have a stash of lumber cut from a forgotten pile of logs in the "south forty" cleared for a right of way over 14 years ago. This neglect has produced some beautiful walnut. All sapwood has decayed leaving sound, richly colored heartwood with browns, reds and straw color. The wood was excavated (really) from a covering of moss and weeds and marked cant sawn, stickered and covered. Excellent coloring in this wood, and slip or bookmatch ready. Key: r

Walnut finishes with a high luster that shows off color variations when quartersawn.
